If you would like to become a mentor - please don't hesitate. There is a child waiting who needs you. Call (724) 657-3680 or e-mail us for more information on becoming a BBBS volunteer. About the Program Welcome to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lawrence County. We are non-profit organization dedicated to serving children from single parent families who, because of divorce, separation, disease or death of a parent, need the support of a special friend. Through one-on-one relationships with a Big Brother or Big Sister, the child's self-image is enhanced, needs for understanding, security and acceptance are met and personal growth occurs. In addition to matching adults and children, the program provides monthly activities open to all program participants. Why be a Mentor? Kids today face many problems that we never had to deal with growing up. A mentor can help a child realize that no matter how bad things seem, there is someone there for them - who is a friend. It has been proven that having a mentor can increase a child's self-esteem and broaden their future significantly. Who Can Participate in BBBS? "Bigs" are men and women who enjoy spending time with children. They must be at least 18 years old, mature, emotionally stable, and responsible; as determined by a screening process conducted by our staff. Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of three hours per week for the first year. "Littles" are between the ages of 6 and 15 and live in a single parent family. Children are referred to the program by parents, social service agencies, churches and schools. There is no cost for either the Big brother/sister or the Little brother/sister. The Match Process Applications must be completed by both volunteers and parents of interested children. Interviews with staff are used to screen all applicants to determine their suitability for the program. Matches are then made on the basis of similarity of interests, age and personality of the volunteer and child. Matches are supported by regular monitoring by program staff. What does a BBBS Mentor do with a Child? It's easy to be a good mentor. It takes only time, concern and the desire to be a true friend to a child. Activities that you may decide to participate in could include: biking, movies, helping with homework, crafts and fishing. Teaching the children new hobbies, sports, and sparking their interest in education and their future is always encouraged. We also provide program sponsored activities for you and your "Little". Please visit our Upcoming Events page to learn more about the activities we have planned. |
