"Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year" Awards Presented at Annual Christmas Party.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lawrence County presented their Big Brother and Big Sister of 2005 Awards at their Annual Christmas party on December 3, 2005.
This year’s winners were Norman Wilson Jr. of Neshannock Township and Lucinda Safran, a Senior Psychology Major at Westminster College.
Mr. Wilson has been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lawrence County since 1997. During his involvement he has been a Big Brother to three children in the community. He was matched with his first Little Brother for 4 years. He was matched with his second for 1 and a half years, until his little brother moved out of the area. Norm is currently matched with his third child and has been since January of this year.
What makes Norman such a great volunteer is his commitment to helping children develop educationally and socially. Norman has encouraged all of the children he has volunteered his time with to read, learn and become well rounded citizens. He takes the kids to the the library, the YMCA, museums, area shows and concerts.
Ms. Safran has been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lawrence County since mid -2003. She has been matched with the same Little Sister throughout her involvement with the program. Lucinda’s little sister has been through many changes during the time they have been matched and Lucinda has been so supportive through it all. Lucinda has truly created a sister like relationship in her match. She has always been reliable and so creative and thoughtful with her little sister.
The winners are picked each year judged on two criteria. First, through the letters their Little Brothers and Sisters send in to nominate them for the award. The second way is by the length of their match and any special circumstances.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has been providing mentoring services to children in Lawrence County since 1994. Anyone who would like more information about how to get your child involved in the program or to become a volunteer, please call our office at 724-657-3680.
